Led Zeppelin IV - 50 Years On.

Led Zeppelin IV climbed to the No1 spot in the UK chart on Dec 4th 1971 where it stayed fo 2 weeks before being dislodged by 'Electric Warrior' by T.Rex.It would go to to spend 61 consecutive weeks in the chart.

In the US it was kept of the top of the charts by Carole Kings 'Tapestry'. However it remained in the chart longer than any other Led Zeppelin Album.

Since its release it has racked up worldwide sales of nearly 40 million. It attained platinum status 23 times over. 

In the UK an error at a pressing plant resulted in a few copies appearing on the Asylum Records label.

In November 1978 it was officially released on lilac vinyl in the UK by Atlantic.

The completed and mixed album was cut at Trident Studios in London.

The Band's first live performance of 'Stairway To Heaven' was on March 5th 1971 at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.

The actual cover photo was said by Page to have been discovered by Plant when the pair of the visited an antique shop in Reading.

So is Led Zeppelin IV 'The One' ,the album that comes as close to front and back perfection as any rock record?

helps organise 'A Concert For Bangladesh' in New York. Yes bring progressive rock into the top ten
in both UK and USA.

Jan 1970 - UK singer and Pianist 
Elton John has his first UK Top 
Ten hit 'Your Song' which reaches
 No8.





Jan 1970 -Black Sabbath release 
their second album 'Paranoid'.
The album goes to No1 in the
 UK, the single 'Paranoid' reaches
 No4.




Mar 71 - Jethro Tull release their 
fourth studio album 'Aqualung'.
It would be their best selling album
with over 7 million sales worldwide.






Apr 71 -  Paul McCartney has his 
first solo hit with 'Another Day'.
The song features his wife Linda
on vocal harmonies and would go 
on to reach No2 in the UK chart.





Apr 71 - The Doors release their 6th
studio album 'LA Woman'.It includes
'Love Her Madly' and Riders On The 
Storm. Lead singer Jim Morrison
dies of a drug overdose three months
later.




Apr 71 - The Rolling Stones 9th studio
album 'Sticky Fingers' is released. It 
tops the charts in the UK and USA.
It included the hit single 'Brown Sugar.




May 71 - Rod Stewart releases his 3rd
studio album 'Every Picture Tells A Story'.
It goes on to No 1 in the UK and USA along
with the single 'Maggie May'.







June 71 - Pilton, Somerset holds the first
'Glastonbury Fair' featuring a Pyramid Stage.
Artists includes David Bowie, Traffic and 
Hawkwind.






July 71 - The Allman Brothers release
their breakthrough live double album 'At
Filmore East'.In October Duanne Allman
is killed in a motorcycle accident.







July 71 - Marc Bolan shortens his bands name
from Tyrannosaurus Rex to T.Tex.They go on 
to score a No1 single with 'Get It On'.







Aug 71 - The concert for Bangladesh is held in
New York City. The concert was organised by 
George Harrison and Ravi Shankar.







Aug 71 - The Who release their 5th album Who's
Next which hits No1 in the UK and No4 in US.
It included the hit single 'Won't Get Fooled Again'.







Nov 71 - Led Zeppelin release their 4th studio 
album which tops the UK chart and reaches No2 
in US. The album contained 'Stairway To Heaven'
and becomes one of the best selling albums of all
time.





Dec 71 - David Bowie moves to RCA Records
and releases his 4th album Hunky Dory which
reaches No3 in UK. It contained the hit single
'Life On Mars'.






Dec 71 - Alice Cooper release their 4th album
Killer. It gives them their highest chart position
to date reaching No 21 in the US and No27 in
the UK.
