Albums that reached No1 in UK - Led Zeppelin 2, Beatles 'Let It Be', Bob Dylan 'Self Portrait',
Moody Blues 'A Question Of Balance' CCR 'Cosmo's Factory',Rolling Stone 'Get Yer Ya-Yas Out, Black Sabbath 'Paranoid', Pink Floyd 'Atom Heart Mother', Led Zeppelin 3, Bob Dylan 'New Morning'.

The Isle of Wight festival is held with an audience of over 600,000.

Worldwide 'Let it Be' is top selling single, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' is top selling album

Deaths this year - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Alan Wilson guitarist and singer with Canned Heat.


Jan 1970 - Simon & Garfunkel release 
their final studio album 'Bridge Over
Troubled Water'.
The album would go on to sell
over 25 million copies.


Feb 1970 - The self titled debut album from
Birmingham rockers Black Sabbath
is released.
It charts at No 8 in the UK. Six months later
their album 'Paranoid reached No1.

Feb 1970 - Paul McCartney files a petition
with the court to dissolve The Beatles.
He was unhappy with the bands decision
to hire Phil Spector to remix the songs on
the 'Let It Be Album'.


Mar 1970 - American based supergroup 
Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young release the album
'Deja Vu'.It reaches No1 in the US and No5 in 
the UK.It contains the hit singles 'Woodstock',
'Our House'and 'Teach Your Children'.



Apr 1970 - Californian singer songwriter Norman
Greenbaum releases his single 'Spirit In The Sky'.
It reaches No1 in the UK and No3 in the US.
It sells more than 2 million copies.




May 1970 - Paul McCartney releases hid debut
solo album 'McCartney which reaches No1 in
US and No2 in the UK. No singles were released 
from the album, 'Maybe I'm Amazed' probably
being the best known song.



June 1970 - Deep Purple release their 4th album
'In Rock'.The album reaches No4 in the UK but
has a poor showing in US.
It has the classic MKII line up of Blackmore,
Gillen, Paice, Glover and Lord.



Sept 1970 - On 17th Sept 1970 Jimi Hendrix 
dies from an overdose of barbituates in London.
He was only 27 years of age.




Oct 1970 - Free release their classic single 
'All Right Now'.It reaches No2 in the UK and
No4 in US.
Taken from their third album 'Fire And Water',
the record has one of the great rock riffs.



Oct 1970 - The Kinks score their 13th UK
top 10 hit with the excellent single 'Lola'.
The single was originally banned by the BBC
for containing the words 'Coca Cola' They were
changed to 'Cherry Cola' so it would get 
some airplay.


Nov 1970 - The self titled debut album from
prog rockers Emerson, Lake and Palmer was
released.
It reaches No4 in the UK and No18 in US.
The group went on to release 9 albums.



Dec 1970 - Eric Clapton froms Derek and 
the Dominoes and records the album 'Layla
and Other Assorted Lovesongs'.
The song 'Layla' becomes a rock classic.




Dec 1970 - John Lennon and the Plastic Ono
Band is the solo debut album from the former
Beatle.
The album was produced by Phil Spector and
reaches No6 in US and No8 in UK.



Dec 1970 - Gearge Harrison has a number 1
single in the UK and US with 'My Sweet Lord'.
The song is from his debut solo album 'All
Things Must Pass' which also tops the UK and
US charts.
