This Week In Rock History April 26th - May 2nd.

Rock Albums In The Chart 26th April - 2nd May 1970

Good chart this week from 1970,just in my last years at school so brings back lots of memories.McCartney and Ringo both have their solo offerings in the charts as do the Beatles with Abbey Road. With Led Zeppelin, Stones,Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival,Frank Zappa and Chicagp all with entries it is a strong week for rock . Also good to see Ten Years After with a new entry with their album 'Cricklewood Green'. Big jump up the chart for blues/rock band Blodwyn Pig's second album 'Getting To This'

Vinyl Track Of The Week

This week Peter Frampton celebrates his 71st birthday so obvious choice for this weeks vinyl. I have gone with 'Show Me The Way' from Frampton Comes Alive, one of my favourite songs from one of the best live albums ever. In addition I have also gone with 'From The Underworld ' from way back in 1967. This was the first track from The Herd's 'Paradise Lost' album, a single that reached number six in the UK top 20.

Top 100 70's Songs

     TOP 100 70’s SONGS

Here we are with my top 100 songs from the seventies, and have to admit choosing was a lot harder than what I thought it would be. I suppose they cannot all be classed as 'rock' songs, some are a bit 'pop' a couple are a bit soppy but nevertheless less still good songs in my opinion. I decided to limit the number of songs from some artists (Pink Floyd, Bowie, Genesis, Deep Purple, Rainbow) in the 100 but could easily have included more.
Some 'big' songs are missing from my list, 'Smoke On The Water', 'Stairway To Heaven','Another Brick In The Wall, 'Freebird', 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as good as they are they just did not make my list.

So here are my top 100 songs, they are listed in no particular order of preference, however if I was pushed to name a favourite rock track I think it would be 'Stargazer'

Rock Albums In The Chart 18th - 24 April 1976

This weeks look at the album chart shows a new entry in at number 1 for Led Zeppelin with their seventh album 'Presence'. Their are also listings for Status Quo, Wings, Bob Dylan, Eagles and Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Also showing although now on the way out of the chart is Genesis' first album without Peter Gabriel 'A Trick Of The Tail' and what good album it is as well. One surprise showing for me is Nils Lofgren with his album 'Cry Tough', must admit I did not realise he was so popular in the UK.

On the Prog side of things there are albums from Rick Wakeman and Camel.

This Week In Rock History

Rock Albums In The Chart 13th - 19th April 1975

This weeks album chart from 1975 is a bit of a mixed bag with a few rock orientated albums to keep us happy. There are albums by Bowie, Bad Company, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin ,John Lennon, Supertramp and the Blue Jays (featuring Moody Blues stalwarts Justin Haywood and John Lodge). Progressive rock appears with albums from Rick Wakeman and Tangerine Dream ( not sure if Supertramp should be included here?). Vinyl Track Of The Week

For this weeks track lets celebrate the birthday of Burke Shelley, bass and vocalist with Welsh rockers Budgie. The chosen track this week is 'Breadfan' ,the opening track from their third album 'Never Turn Your Back On A Friend' which was released in 1973. Six minutes long it is a true rock track with a great guitar riff that grabs you by the throat. This song was later covered by Metallica, included on their album ,'Garage Inc'

Rock Albums In The Chart 2nd - 8th April 1972

This week we look at what was happening regarding rock albums from the chart of 1971. There are albums from Groundhogs, Jimi Hendrix, Slade, T-Rex and Jethro Tull. Just on its way out of the chart now is 'Imagine' by John Lennon now on its 24th week in the chart.

Couple of what I suppose you could call folk/rock bands are Lindisfarne ( 2 albums this week ) and Strawbs. Also would like to give Cat Steven's 'Teaser And The Firecat'a mention, not a 'rock' artist as such but a good album nontheless.

Seems to be every week I mention 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', at this particular time it was on its 112th week in the chart.

Vinyl Track Of The Week

As it is Angus Young's Birthday this week it is only appropriate that this weeks track should be from AC/DC.
The track I have chosen is 'Whole Lotta Rosie' the last track on their 1977 album 'Let There Be Rock', 5 minutes of pure rock energy.
Always a big favourite when performed live so the link below is from their Donington performance in 1991. Although the vocals on the original album track were by Bon Scott there is no doubt Brian Johnson does it credit on this track.

I guess my love for rock music began about 1970, during my last years at school.   As older pupils were allowed to have a common room wher...
